What Are the Symptoms of a Heavy Period?

You may have heavy periods if you’re dealing with any of the following:

  • Relying on super or super plus tampons and pads (even though at times they don’t cut it).
  • Bleeding that soaks through a pad or tampon every 1-2 hours.
  • You wake up in the middle of the night to change your tampon or pad.
  • You pass large blood clots (larger than the size of a quarter).
  • You feel overly tired or experience shortness of breath, which may indicate anemia.
  • Your period flow affects relationships, work, productivity, social life, and overall well-being.

What Causes Heavy Periods?

There are several potential causes of heavy periods, and determining the root cause is essential for effective treatment. Common causes include:

  • Uterine Fibroids: These are growths that form on the wall of the uterus. Depending on the size and location of the fibroid, they can cause heavy periods.

  • Hormone Imbalance: During the menstrual cycle, estrogen works to build up the uterine lining in preparation for a possible pregnancy. If the estrogen levels are elevated, the lining can grow excessively, leading to heavy periods. There are a variety of factors that can affect this including:

  • Lack of Ovulation: Women who are not using hormonal contraception and are not ovulating regularly may experience higher estrogen levels relative to progesterone. This imbalance is particularly common among women with PCOS.

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Women with PCOS who don’t experience ovulation and have irregular menstrual bleeding may experience heavier or prolonged bleeding episodes.

  • Endometriosis: This condition causes a range of symptoms including painful menstrual cramps, heavy bleeding, discomfort during bowel movements or urination, and pain during sex. While it can be difficult to obtain a proper diagnosis, it’s very common, in fact about 1 in 10 women have it.
